Tell me briefly about yourself.
My name is Michael and I am a first year electrical apprentice working at Harvey Group. I have worked with multiple qualified electricians which has helped me learn across a range of building sites.
How long have you been with Harvey Group as an apprentice, and what sites have you worked at?
I have been an apprentice at Harvey Group for 5 months now and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I have worked on multiple sites such as Ulidia Integrated College, Kings Hall Plot 4, NI Water, and Radius Housing.
What college are you enrolled in?
I am enrolled in South Eastern Regional College in Downpatrick.
Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?
I decided to pursue an apprenticeship as I enjoy being hands on and learn better through trial and error.
How have you balanced on-site training with your college studies?
I work on-site four days a week and go to college every Wednesday. It’s a nice way to split up the working week whilst also learning.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I personally enjoy the way an apprenticeship provides me with a weekly routine which I can follow without fail.
Is there anything you are looking forward to learning and/or doing on-site?
I look forward to seeing the full development of the sites that I am working on; being able to see the final product.
What skills have you developed through your apprenticeship that you didn’t expect to learn?
I have developed better communication skills, as when on-site being talkative can make a job more enjoyable.
What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
If you are thinking about doing an apprenticeship, I would definitely recommend it as it will provide you with skills that you can use for the rest of your life.
