Tell me briefly about yourself.
My name is Aodhan and I am a second year Apprentice Plumber at Harvey Group. So far in my apprenticeship I have worked on-site with both the M&E and the FM teams.
How long have you been with Harvey Group as an apprentice, and what sites have you worked at?
I started with Harvey Group in February 2024, and have worked on a number of sites including Ulidia Integrated College in Carrickfergus, Randox Health in Hollywood, and Lismore College in Craigavon.
I have also worked with the FM team at a number of B&Q stores, Phoenix Gas, and a number PureGyms locations.
What college are you enrolled in?
I attend college one day a week at Belfast Met’s Millfield Campus where I am a second year student.
Why did you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?
I decided to pursue an apprenticeship so I could learn and gain experience at the same time. I also wanted a hands-on job with the opportunity to move up the ladder.
How have you balanced on-site training with your college studies?
I am in college one day a week so I use that day to do the majority of my studies, but you can learn a lot more practical work on-site. I also use my time on-site to build up my portfolio and get it signed off by colleagues.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is finding problems, and in plumbing there are plenty of chances to find one, and figuring out a way to fix it.
I also enjoy being able to work while I learn and being on-site as part of a team.
Is there anything you are looking forward to learning and/or doing on-site?
I am looking forward to getting on the next big project, as I find it interesting seeing them being built from start to finish.
What skills have you developed through your apprenticeship that you didn’t expect to learn?
I have learned lots of skills since starting my apprenticeship, but one thing I did not expect was recently in college when I completed a section on renewable energy systems.
What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
My advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship is to jump right in. It is a great way to start your career as you can learn as you work. Which, in my opinion, is the best way.
