Girdwood Community Hub, located in the heart of Belfast, was successfully handed over in November 2015.
The project culminated in a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose building specifically designed for use by the local community, offering first-class leisure and education facilities. Girdwood subsequently received the accolade of "Community Benefit Project of the year" at the Property Industry Excellence awards in Dublin and also achieved a BREEAM Rating of "Excellent". The project, funded via the EU's PEACE lll Programme will be managed by the Special EU Programmes body, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development, BMC and Better Leisure.
Spaces include a state-of-the-art Gym, a Spa, Sports Hall & Changing Facilities, in addition to Community areas and Classrooms.
Underfloor Heating was installed, to compliment the exposed concrete within the building. LTHW for the UFH is fed from an impressive 1.2 miles of Ground Source pipework, concealed below the outdoor pitch producing 137kW(h). Solar Thermal for Domestic Hot Water and Rainwater Harvesting for use in Toilets adds to the sustainable M&E Installation. A bespoke/low energy Ventilation System, incorporating natural solutions has been installed, reducing energy usage and is further offset by the Photovoltaic installation resulting in a Carbon Neutral Ventilation/PV System.
Lighting within the Community Hub has been commended for its integration within the Architectural Features and bolsters the energy efficiency through the incorporation of daylighting controls.
